Lancashire County Pool Association 2009 season(National County Finals & England Trials - 5-7th March 2010)
Lancashire A, B and Ladies have all won Region 2, beating Cheshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and Cumbria and therefore have all qualified for the National Finals in March 2010.  Gareth Hibbott, Simon Fitzsimmons, Del Redmond, Nathan Bridges(all Ley Inn 5 Cues) and Jason Hill(Ley Inn Reds) played for the A team.  Craig Day(Rileys Z), Sam Lancaster(Ley Inn Reds) and Dave O'Shaughnessy(Ley Inn 5 Cues) compete for the B team, and Anne Roccia, Alison Parkes and Louise Kearns(all Team Regal) play for the Ladies.  In addition to that, Fitzsimmons, Hill and Parkes have earned England trials on 5th March 2010.  Hibbott and Roccia(finished ranked number 1 in the region), are already in the England set up.
November 6th-8th(Champion of Champions, Great Yarmouth)
Ley Inn 5 Cues were crowned the best pub team in England by fighting off the challenge of over 150 other local league Premier Division League champions from throughout the country and coming away with the first prize of £2,500.  The team were represented by Jason Hill(Captain), Lee Clough, Gareth Hibbott, Sam Lancaster, Del Redmond, Andy Sudworth and Simon Fitzsimmons.

After qualifying through to the national finals the team firstly took on the Hinkley Snooker Club.  After racing into a 5-0 lead, the team seemed to be cruising.  A few blips then occured, with Hinkley pulling the score back to 6-4.  The 5 Cues then picked up the pace to record a 9-5 victory.  5 Cues second group game with Arches saw a winner takes all last 32 spot after they had also beat Hinkley 9-5.  The team played well and never looked in trouble and recorded an 8-3 victory.  A quickfire display then took the team into the last 16 with an 8-2 victory over BPC Sharks.  The last 16, against a good Peterborough side Limetree Mavericks was played at 9am Sunday morning, after a night out on 'the lash' for most team members.  Hill decided to go with his 'most sober' players to give the rest time to recover.  It worked surprisingly well as 5 Cues produced their best performance of the weekend, with 6 8 ballers in an 8-1 victory(maybe the team should drink more often?????).  In the quarter final a surprise package from Birmingham(Station Street A) stood in 5 Cues way of a 3rd consecutive semi final appearance in this tournament.  In stark contrast to the previous round, the team struggled and trailed 4-1.  The match played on 2 tables then took a twist.  Andy Sudworth fluked a ball and cleared up, when almost certainly he was about to lose but for the fluke.  Almost simultaneously Jason Hill won a lucky frame 7 after his opponent failed to capitalise on 2 guilt edged chances to win the frame.  This left 5 Cues trailing 4-3 when it could so easily have been 6-1.  5 Cues then picked up the pace and raced through to an 8-5 victory.  The semi final was against Woolwich Catholic Club(London), consisting of top players such as Andy Breen and Dean Wisher.  A whirlwind start brought a 4-0 lead.  Woolwich pegged 5 Cues back to 6-4, and it should have gone 6-5, but a mistake let in the 5 Cues, who capitalised and ran out 8-4 winners.  A surprise package in Ox and Plough(Great Yarmouth) reached the final.  They had just trounced one of the strong favourites Club 147(Leicester) 8-1 in the semi final.  5 Cues, having lost in the semi final and final in the last 2 years, did not want to be denied again.  The final was played on 3 tables.  The Preston cuemen were awesome, racing into a 6-0 lead in an almost faultless performance.  Despite being cheared on by the local support, they had no answer to the firepower of the 5 Cues.  Gareth Hibbott sank the winning black for an 8-1 victory.  On collecting the winners prize of £2,500, the very large trophy and the title of best pub pool team in the country, captain Jason Hill said 'the boys played some awesome pool, with every member of the team contributing well.  I think this title was 'coming' and fully deserved.  Lee Clough was almost faultless, only losing one frame all weekend(He didn't get a shot in that frame).'  Landlord Peter Milnes was delighted with the teams achievement.

Although Jason didn't seem to get first crack at the finish in his quarter final, he played a solid game.  A missed pot by Toms when looking like going 5-2 up changed the complection of the game as Jason picked up his game to race through to a deseved 8-4 victory.  Jason went into the semi final in confident mood, even though Hubbard had beaten the last 2 world champions in the previous 2 rounds in Phil Harrison and Potts.  Sometimes you just have to say well played though, and Hubbard certainly did that.  Jason only missed his first pot of the match in frame 7, although he didn't seem to get much table time as Hubbard had no less than 6 8 ballers.  Jason did miss a few chances late on, but the damage had already been done by the awesome display of Hubbard.  Jason actually said to Hubbard after he missed his first of only 2 pots in the match, 'Oh so you are human.'  Ian replied no, i'm a robot!  Lol!  Jason did pick up £1,000 for his troubles.

MONEY MATCHES

Jason Hill v Michael Barron(Doncaster) on Friday 12th June, 7pm start at Railway, Askern, Doncaster,  £1,700 per man first to 21.  Cancelled due to Michael Barron falling 'ill.'

James Brookens lost to Lou Callaghan(Blackpool) on Wednesday 3rd June at the Central Club in Blackpool.  James could never manage to get infront of his opponent, although he was level at 3-3, 5-5 and 7-7 and had a good chance to go 8-7 up.  A crucial miss from James on the black at 11-9 down put paid to his chances, although a fluked black from Callaghan finally gave him victory at 13 frames to 9 in this £3,000 per man challenge match.

22nd-25th May(UK Tour Event 3- Daventry) - Gareth Hibbott, Lee Clough, Nathan Bridges, Jason Hill, Andy O'Hara and James Brookens all competed.  O'Hara, Brookens(both last 256) and Hill(Last 128) were all beaten reasonably early.  Bridges was very close to beating world champion Gaz Potts, losing 7-6(Last 32 - £125).  Clough(£250) was beaten by provisional number 1 before the event Rob Chilton, in the last 16 by 8 frames to 4.  Hibbott(£1200) went all the way to the final before losing 8-7 in a classic match with Potts, who now has gained his provisional number 1 birth back off Chilton.

In the International Masters pro event, Lee Clough and Gareth Hibbott have both reached the Quarter Final stage, guaranteeing them both £500 each, which will be played at a later date.  Nathan Bridges was beaten in the last 64.

European Championships(Ireland)

Anne Roccia, of London Road LC, came agonisingly close to becoming the leagues first European Individual Champion.  After brushing aside many of Europe's best lady players, she eventually succombed to Carly Smith by 7 frames to 5 after leading 4-2 in the final.  Anne has now come close on a number of occasions to claiming a major title victory.

27-29th February(National County Finals and England trials) - James Brookens, Simon Fitzsimmons and Nathan Bridges all failed to qualify for the England team.  Having all qualified by finishing in the top 8(averages) playing for Lancashire in Region 2, they had to win 6 matches before they lost 3 against other England trialists and join Gareth Hibbott(Rileys Regs) in the England team.  All 3 did manage to win a few matches before being knocked out.

After Lancashire mens team won the Region 2 title by pipping West Yorkshire again, they were unable to repeat their National Championship triumph's of 2005 and 2006, as they went out in the last 8 stage.

6th-8th February 2009(UK Tour 1- Blackpool) - Lee Clough, Jason Hill, Gareth Hibbott, James Brookens, Andy O'Hara and Nathan Bridges competed.  In a high quality field containing the best players in the UK Gareth(Last 64), James(Last 256), Andy(Last 128) and Nathan(Last 128) were all dissapointed.  Out of over 50 newcomers on the tour Jason was top, and beat some notable professional scalps along the way before rattling a difficult black to level at 6-6 versus provisional number 6 Hittan Patel, thus losing 7-5. Beaten in the Quarter Finals, Jason collected £450 and also put himself well on the way to gaining professional status alongside Lee, Gareth and Nathan.  Lee went all the way to the final, with a few last frame deciders in the Quarter's and Semi's before being beaten in the Final(£1200) 8-3 by former world champion Carl 'Houdini' Morris.

22 November 2008 - Preston City individual champion Jason Hill did the league proud by winning the Wigan 8 ball Open which included an illustrious list of top amateurs, internationals and a professional, and took away the 1st prize of £400.

He has won 2 qualifying matches versus the Bolton league champ 5-0 and 5-2 versus the Southport league champ - 32 players remain in the competition.  Jason Hill has drawn Lloyd Frith-Robinson, singles champion from the Peterborough & District Pool League in the next round.  Ley Inn are in a group of 3 teams and must win the group to qualify for the last 32.  Ley Inn's team consists of Lee Clough, Jason Hill, Andy Sudworth, James Brookens, Del Redmond, Simon Fitzsimmons and captain Nathan Bridges.  The team hope to go one better than last year, where they were runners-up.

Also on the same weekend is the National Ladies singles.  Anne Roccia, Louise Kearns, Laura Kane, Alison Parkes and Polly Almond all compete.  Ann Roccia is amongst the favourites, although she will have an expected 3rd round tie against former world champion Emma Cunningham.  These  ladies are also involved in the Red Rose Raiders team hoping to do well in the Ladies National Knockout Cup.  Tina Underdown, Tracey Diffin and Debbie Underdown, who all play for Rileys G, will be competing in this event for the Preston Piranha's team.
