Lancashire Interleague 2010

21st August - Preston South 12-6 Darwen

11th July - Chorley 4-14 Preston South:-

Without star players Gaz Hibbott and Lee Clough the team produced a comprehensive victory against league strugglers Chorley, which put them back top of the league, 1 point above Wigan, and 2 above Accrington.  There were double wins for Barry Rawsthorne, John Rimmer, Jason Hill, Craig Day, Sam Lancaster and Gary Wainwright.

24th May - Wigan 10-8 Preston South:-

An understrength team minus Gaz Hibbott and Jason Hill couldn't quite manage to pull off a victory against a strong Wigan team.

26th April - Preston South 12-6 Lancaster:-

A confident start from our boys produced a decent win against one of the better interleague sides, although at 8-1 up the result could have been better.

Lancashire Interleague KO Cup(Rileys, Preston on Sunday 21st March 2010)

Our league's interleague team won Lancashire KO Cup to go along with the 2009 league title with comprehensive victories over Lancaster 10-0 and Leyland 10-6.  This qualified them for the National finals in Gt Yarmouth in October.  They then went on to beat Accrington 2-1 in a play off to decide the cup champions.

National Interleague Ko Cup(Great Yarmouth on October 3rd and 4th)

A team consisting of the best players from the Preston City Pool league failed at the final hurdle for the second year running to become national champions.  The team was Andy O'Hara(Cap), Steve Crane, Gary Wainwright, Will Jerram, John Rimmer(all Rileys Regs), Gaz Hibbott, Lee Clough, Jason Hill(all Ley Inn 5 Cues), Sam Lancaster(Ley Inn 09) and Craig Day(Rileys Z).

The team struggled to 2 victories in the group stage without playing that well.  First they beat Maidenhead 10-8 and then Dawley 9-7 after being 6-3 down.  The team then stepped up a gear to trounce Bracknell & Ascot by 10-3 in the last 32 stage.  The last 16 brought a lacklustre performance against Whitehaven were several players made under par performances, but the team manages to pull through 10-6 after being 4-2 down.  The team crushed Braintree and Netherthorpe by 10-2 and 10-5 in the quarter and semi final.

Standing in the way of the National Championship title was Sun Valley(Nottingham) who had a team lead by top pro Clint I'Anson.  Preston were always chasing in the match trailing 3-0, 7-4 and 9-6 but got a drastic change in fortunes in frame 16.  England player Liam Stanley(Sun Valley) had the black hanging over the pocket with Craig Day in all sorts of trouble.  A good safety shot from the Preston player left Stanley snookered with his only option being a tough swerve shot off the cushion.  He played it 'too well' as he hit the black and potted it, but the spin on the white helped follow it in and make it 9-7.  Soon after it was 9-8 with Sam Lancaster playing the crucial last frame.  A tactical frame was won well by Lancaster making the scores level, meaning a 3 man play off at simultanious times for the title.  Will Jerram was beaten by a tremendous finish by Sun Valley's I'Anson, but Gaz Hibbott was on the verge of victory and making it 10-10, when Lee Clough missed an uncharecteristic straight red when looking good for victory and the title.  The team picked up £2,000 and will try and go one better next year.

Special mention must go to Gaz Hibbott, Sam Lancaster who both only lost 1 frame all weekend and Lee Clough who had only missed 2 pots all tournament, despite the the last frame miss.  Dave Barron independant Mortgage Brokers of Southport sponsored the team.

National KO Cup Finals(held at Great Yarmouth):-

REPORT

A team representing the Preston City Pool League agonisingly failed at the final hurdle to become the champions of England for the first time since 1996 in Great Yarmouth last weekend.  1,500 people were there to watch the weekends action.  Preston's team consisted of professionals Lee Clough and Gareth Hibbott, current England youth international Craig Day, Jason Hill, Will Jerram, John Rimmer, Dave Chalmers, Sam Lancaster, Mark Hopgood, Dave Jackson, Steve Crane and captain Andy O'Hara.
Competing were 96 of the finest teams in England who had all gone through a qualifying process to reach the national finals.  Firstly Preston had to win there group to qualify for the last 32.  They firstly won 15-3 versus Biggleswade from Bedfordshire and then won 9-4 to win there group against a strongly fancied Small Heath team, from West Midlands.  After cruising to a 5-2 lead in the last 32 versus Worcester it looked plain sailing. Twenty minutes later Preston were 6-5 down.  The match, played on 2 tables was looking like going 8-5 to the Worcester team, but crucial missed pots almost simultaneously on both tables from the Worcester team let in both Lee Clough and Gareth Hibbott to turn the match around and put Preston 7-6 up.  Preston didn't look back and ended up 10-7 winners.  In the last 16 and Quarter Final Greater Manchester team Normans Elite and White Rose from West Yorkshire were brushed aside 10-4 and 10-3 respectively.  In the Semi-Final they came up against one of the big guns and former winners Leicester.  Although they were missing top snooker professional Mark Selby from their line up they still had a team packed with quality players.  At 4-2 down and looking like 5-2 things looked bleak for Preston, but a miraculous full length double on the black from current individual champion Jason Hill put Preston back in it at 4-3 down and totally changed the complection of the match.  Preston then powered to a 10-6 victory.
The final was played against current defending champions Trent Trophies, from Staffordshire who had won this trophy a record 7 times previously.  Not surprising when you look at their line up.  It consisted of 3 players who had reached atleast the world championship Quarter Finals this year.  They were lead by current and 3 times World champion Gareth Potts.  Preston were after revenge from an agonising 11-10 defeat to their opponents at the last 16 stage last year.  Preston stormed into 3-0 and 4-1 leads before being pegged back to 5-4 up at the half time interval.  Despite Jason Hill beating Potts in the second half of the match, Preston had to thank Sam Lancaster for potting a tremendous ball under extreme pressure in disposing of Daz Lightfoot to level the match at 9-9.  This meant a 3 frame play off for the title infront of a packed crowd.  Will Jerram, scorer of 29 147's at snooker, got Preston off to a flier with a victory over World Championship Semi-Finalist Adam Davies.  Potts didn't let Lee Clough to the table with an 8 ball clearance from the break.  This left it all down to Gareth Hibbott, also a World Championship Semi-Finalist this year to get Preston over the line.  He didn't manage to pot off the break, and cool as a cucumber England Captain Lee Kendall polished up the table for an 11-10 victory for the Staffordshire outfit.
Special mention must be given to Will Jerram, who was immense over the weekend winning 14 out of 15 frames and Preston's sponsors, Dave Barron independant Mortgage Brokers of Southport.  Jason Hill said the team were obviously gutted after the defeat but vowed to come back stronger next time.
